I'm thinking of starting a new community site about a particular niche (a brand of product, actually). What domain name would be best, keeping in mind SEO and branding?.

This question doesn't really apply to only my niche but just about any niche... so I'll ask in general terms in the poll...

Well, yeah that is obviously ideal. But in my case, the niche is a brand name so is already taken... the others are still available, though...

Sorry I misunderstood that, but my vote still stands...

I would go for the last option. It really depends on your niche. Lets say that your niche keyword is "xbox". You can use Overture to find out all the related keyword searches for xbox. Then pick the words that are small and easier to remember..

Just my 2 cents...

It does not have to be about the niche 100%. If your niche was SEO you could have It's not 100% related but it's a term that any "SEO'R" would understand. You don't 100% have to have the niche name in the url, more so if the keywords you will be targeting don't relate to the domain name...

[NicheName] if it's a forum..

Here's some other options:.

[NicheName] (plural).

[NicheName].net - if it's still available..

Doh! I guess I didn't check properly earlier, cause [NicheName] is already taken (and parked unused).

Using [NicheName] for my site when [NicheName] is owned by someone else would be too confusing. I think I'm going to go with something completely different and with a little creative flair...

It depends on the niche to. You would not want to have elifeinsurance and be the leading company in that niche LOL...

I mean try to keep it related. As in most cases e means electronic. So electronics is not really related in life insurance. But it could be!.

So try to keep it related. If you tell us the niche we might be able to give more accurate suggestions...

[NicheName] I think also could be worth getting [NicheName]

As you can see with the name of this forum, I wanted to use a name that no one else had, and didn't really have any real meaning either. When coming up with names I not only look at it from an easy to spell and easy to remember perspective, but also from a brandable approach. Ebay is probably the best example for it. It doesn't mean a damn thing, and it's pretty easy to spell, not to mention completely brandable and very simple to remember, it also has it's own meaning. When you think of "ebay" they've branded it so that you think of online auctions. Whether it was intentional or not, it's a great way to tap into a market and dominate through branding. More people know of ebay than Sothebys by now...

100% true..

Google & Yahoo are some more examples. Hell, when people want information about something, others tell them to "google" it. Now that's branding...
