I'm stumped. I'm not so sure what is the answer to that question. I'll do some research and get back to you if I discover an answer. You should email the people at Verisign as they probably could give you an answer..
Thanks very much Jim...I have replaced files in the past, so I know the client is set up to overwrite when I upload a like named one. Soooo... I backed up the two files, brought them over to this Beyond Compare program (that someone here recommended) and made one out of two. Every thing seems to be fine..
I back my files up to a folder that I make on my desktop. Is that the typical way to do it?.
On another note...it just so happens that I have been looking into your more pics contrib. (there are so many of them that I have to spend some time kicking them over!). I would like to install it, but I wonder if it would conflict with a previous picture upgrade I did a week or so ago. It was just a replacement of the popup_image.php file. really just centered the picture nicely in the window with a close button. I can get the name of it if you need.
I keep backups on a separate hard drive, on a separate computer. That's perhaps a bit too paranoid, but I've had enough hardware failures that I don't want to keep all of my eggs in one basket. Since your desktop is (usually) on your primary hard drive, the loss of that drive will take everything with it. A second hard drive would be a good idea. Keep the copy that you are working with on one drive and the backups on a separate drive. Portable drives are cheap now, especially since you don't need a huge one.
If nothing else, burn a CD-R occasionally and stash it away..
More Pics will replace your popup file again, since it adds new functionality to it. You could probably merge the two using Beyond Compare if you wanted. If you want to use the CSS box, the popup isn't even used any more and can be disregarded. It all depends on what options you want to use. What you want your store to look like will determine which of the multi-image contributions you use, and how you set it up..
Thank you Jim! very good advise and I will do just that. I have an old zip drive I will use for now..
Would you mind recommending your preference on a good SEO contrib?.
Also Jim...what do you mean by the CSS box? I am not married to the idea of a pop up image only. I just think that given what I sell on my store, it is more usefull for the customer to have different angles of the product. I was thinking something that might have two or three thumbnails on the product info page to choose from, or something like that...
I use one of the Meta Tag contributions that I have modified. I also add text on Category pages with a custom mod. I think that there are meta contributions that do this as well. I also have some custom mods that block search engines from seeing duplicate products and return 404 headers for discontinued products. Sorry, but I started doing this many years ago and have built up my own selection of mods, so I'm not really up to date on what's available right now. You might do better to ask questions in the general forum about this..
I don't use any of the contributions that rewrite URLs because I don't think they do any good. The major search engines know about dynamic URLs and can handle them. Rewriting can cause problems with contributions that don't support the modification, and can ruin your position if you have an existing site..
I don't have a fancy name for the CSS box. It's just a large image (the first one of your images) with thumbnails of all of the images next to it. If you click on one of the thumbnails (or point your mouse at it if it's set that way) the thumbnail image is swapped into the big image. Instantly. It's quick and easy for the customer to use. The settings are CSS definitions in your stylesheet..
You can also display a grid (or a row or a column) of thumbnails with the standard click-to-popup, or just a group of full-size images. This can all be set up in the Admin. There are a lot of options to make it look the way you want..
Thanks again Jim, I appreciate your help very much. I am going to work on the CSS (whatever this stands for) box tonite..
About the Meta tag thing and SEO and all that, I know I have to do something and I also know I am in over my head. I believe there is a protocol bout talking business on the forum (maybe not) but if I need your email address or someone elses that you can recommend, I think I would be better off handing this part over to someone who know what they are doing?..
I wonder if someone could help? I have just recently seen a index(2).php file along with the index.php file in my catalog/ directory. I think it may have downloaded during a 'featured products' upgrade. Everything seems to be working fine with the site, but I wonder if this could cause a problem that I am not aware of?.
Also it seems the index(2).php file is the original because it has some lines that I added earlier (META NAME keywords etc.), and the index.php has the changes required by the 'featured products' upgrade, like changing the name of the 'new products' box..
I am getting ready to attempt the 'header tags seo' add on (I found the file while researching for the download), and I don't know if this would cause problems..
Your FTP client may be set to append a number instead of overwriting the original file. Check your client's settings to find out. If so, you just have a backup of an older file. Move it to your backup area or delete it if you already have a backup of that version..
If you're not backing up your files every time you make a change, do so. Now. It's important..
