need help choosing a camera

I need help in choosing a camera, preferably a dslr or slr-like, I am looking for the best bang-for-the-buck, and I am will to spend about $400.

I was thinking of getting either the Sony DSC-H50 or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28.

Does anybody think that there is a better deal than these two? or which one of these is the better choice.

Any help would be much appreciated..

You'll get a lot of opinions on this forum about the "best" camera. Unless you figure out what's important to you, you may end up with a great camera for someone else, but not for you..

This might be of help ....

I have a Sony H9 with a 15x Zoom. Most of the pictures are "soft" (fuzzy). Many of us H9 owners sent a petition to Sony to provide a fix for the camera, but we were ignored. No fix, no response, no recognition that we even existed..

Meanwhile, the Sony is saddled with very expensive Sony proprietary battery, add on lenses, filters, etc. So, if you choose Sony, be prepared to pay almost double for their over priced accessories. But, if you like soft pictures then Sony is a good choice..

If you don't like the Panasonic FZ28, then look at some other cameras with a 12X or 10X zoom..

All the best,Jim.

What sort of photo's do you want to take? Please be as specific as possible. Have you had a camera in the past you like or don't like? If so, what is it about that camera you like or dislike?..

It might just be that a 15x zoom with a Zeiss lens in name only isn't up to expectations. I'd be wary that the names on modern lenses don't necessarily represent the optical quality that made those names legendary. A 31mm to 465mm (equivalent, 15x) is a large compromise no matter who makes it or designs it. I believe it's possible that some manufacturers buy the right to use the Zeiss (or other names) on their lenses for a given price if they can meet a set of standards. That doesn't mean Zeiss designed or manufactured the lens. I think it's called maximizing the profit from the brand _name_..

I think the classic great optical companies, Zeiss included, do still make some exceptional optics. I don't believe there's any such thing as an optically great 15x zoom lens. The name on the lens itself is no longer a guarantee of it...

Sony also marketed the H9 with an "Advanced Sport Mode". What a bad joke! It turned out to be 1/60 second setting - which is fast enough to stop action of a snail, but nowhere near the 1/1000 sec that you really need for Sports action pictures. So, Sony burned us a second time..

I used to trust and respect Sony, but no any more. An old teacher of mine used to say: A word to the wise is sufficient..

I'm looking to take regular portrait (close range and far away) type photos, nothing too fancy, I just want a good camera that will take nice photos.

My friend has a lumix fz20 which is really nice, I really like that camera, the zoom and the quality of the photos r some very good key points..

My advice would be to spend an additional $100 and purchase the Sony A200 dslr plus 18mm x 70mm 4x optical zoom lens. It has a much better picture quality, especially at low light, than any point and shoot camera...

If you need to take photo's in low light or other specialized conditions a DSLR may be a better fit. If you do, shop for yourself based on the rough criteria below. Don't buy a Sony or any other SLR because someone else tells you that's the "best" choice. There is no "best" choice for everyone..

Since you seem to like the Panasonic FZ28 and Sony H50 is there some point of indecision between the two?.

For the following I'll assume you've handled both cameras and feet the ergonomics and user interface are both acceptable. If you haven't tried both cameras then do that first..

Make a list of the features you'd like. Ergonomics and user interface should be on the top of your list. Divide them into need to have and nice to have. With that list in hand see which camera fits your needs better...
