I recently saw a domain go for mid $xx,xxx so I found a like domain and grabbed it.

The domains are Olympic Games related and doing my trademark searches I find the trademarks are dead on

I have found a lot of discussion years back of how the Olympic Committee tried to copyright and trademark the words olympic and games but were unsuccessful.

Any insight? I'm trying to do the research first but not sure if I'm looking in the right spots...

It is a trademark and I would stay well away from it, especially as the IOC are know to be very aggresive in protecting their brand

Good luck..

Depends what you want to do with it.

They claim trademark to almost any use of Olympic except the Olympic mountain area of Washington state and uses begun before a certain date, maybe 1960s or 1970s.

They have only gone to WIPO twice as I recall, when people were running businesses using that word in the domain name. But they are super aggressive towards anyone using the phrase olympics, they even went after an amateur robot olympics competitition.

So a domain like that can expect zero resale value and just offering it for sale is an opener to losing it...

Thanks for the replies.

So how much stock do you guys into stuff like that when you see being sold for $45,000 on Flippa?..

I wouldn't put a huge amount of weight behind this kind of sale. Do you actually know if the domain was transfered and money paid??.

Clearly the domain was registered in bad faith and has a huge TM issue. Also selling a TM domain does not remove your liability for registering it and does not stop you being sued...

Is that sold or offered?.

Buying an expensive domain with olympics in it is seriously stupid.

It could be legit to use domains like this for non-commercial "fan" sites but I doubt the aggro is worth it.

The worst is we pay for all this - places that host the Olympics lose money big time...

Depends whether you believe the sale or not I guess?? There are a lot of sales recorded that are completely rubbish/fake It doesnt really, I recall an company in Canada (I think) that was forced to change it's name or had the domain taken away because it had the word "Olympic" in it, I think it was "Olympic Tires" or something, nothing to do with the Olympic Games...

Hey thanks for all the replies. I'm learning and appreciate the advice...

The entity that owns the Olympic trademarks is very, very active in enforcing their mark...
