I sometimes buy bagged lettuce, and I also look for mark-downs when it is getting ready to...um...turn. Gotta save money wherever I can.

So, I learned to take a paper towel and put it in the bag of lettuce after I take out my 1st serving. I try to get the paper towel to contact as much of the lettuce as possible, and then close the bag, roll it up like a tortilla and then put a big rubber band around it to keep it tight. You can even use the paper towel method with clamshells of lettuce, placing it on top of the lettuce and then storing it upside down in the frig.

I can now keep lettuce for MUCH longer than before, so I wanted to share this little tip..

Do *you* have any tips for keeping that expensive produce?..

Your question was: Keeping veggies fresh during Nutrisystem?.

I use Fridgesmarts to keep mine fresh. I cut and wash when I'm ready to prepare. That also helps to keep them fresh longer...

I freeze bags of spinach, just as they are about to "turn". They still make a great veggie dish, saute'd with mushrooms and garlic, even when frozen..

I also stuff a paper towel in fresh mushrooms..

Lynn.

And the black mini poodles..

Kompukat, I've never used those before. I've used Debbie Myers' Green Bags and I really didn't think they worked very well. Have you tried them?.

Lynn, I've never thought about that my local Kroger *always* has marked down bags/packages of produce & I'll do that next time I see some spinach on sale!..

Thanks for the paper towel idea. Looking forward to trying it. A bag of the lettuce mix only lasts a couple of days anyway but who doesn't hate soggy lettuce...

With paper towels, it will last for 3-4 days I know that because sometimes I'll buy 2-3 bags of lettuce at a time if they're on sale, and it's just me eating them, so by the time I get to the 3rd bag, it would be mush if not for the paper towels!..

I'm just going through and catching up on older threads from the last coupla weeks.....

Thanks for the tips! These are great! I am definitely looking for a way to make my lettuce last longer..

I also store my fresh mushrooms in a paper bag, in the fridge. Seems to do pretty well for them..

,.

I use the Fridgesmarts too, they are amazing, the lettuce stays fresh for what seems like forever (I know for a fact I have kept romaine lettuce hearts for two weeks before it has gone bad)...

I've found that taking lettuce/greens out of a plastic bag and rolling them in a cotton/linen towel helps them last longer...

I taking my salad greens out of the bag and putting into a covered glass casserole dish. I think they are staying crisp longer. Have to try the paper towel...

I've also read that you can wrap them up in foil to last longer. It seems to work for me...

Somewhere on these posts someone suggested using zip-lock plastic bags with a paper towel, and that has worked very well. You can squeeze all the air out before zipping so the salad doesn't get air or moisture. No more brown or damp, wilted lettuce...

I chop any veg - celery, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc and freeze them on a jelly roll pan, then I put them in resealable baggies..

I do the same with strawberries, blueberries, bananas - can use for protien shakes..
