I know Medifast says not to exercise the first two weeks. But they also say that people who were exercising should cut it to 45 minutes. I guess my question is how detrimental exercising would be. Has anyone exercised the first two weeks?..

I did, both the first time I started and the recommit in November. I started working out again in March 2010, two months before starting MediFast, and I didn't want to stop. In the beginning, it was mostly treadmill workouts. I have my own treadmill and like to do the hill workouts, which puts you on different inclines, but I didn't choose one that was too hard. When I recommited, I was already doing CrossFit, which is very intense, and I just stuck with it..

I still lost pretty well, but a lot of people say it slows their loss. And I don't really want to go against the "official rules/guidelines" lest I get slammed. I'm just saying I personally did exercise the first two weeks, and didn't have a problem...

Your subject says you have a 4 & 2 question, too, but you never posted it? I was on the 5 & 1 both times I started. Sometimes I will take a 4 & 2 do on my CrossFit days, but not often. I try to listen to my body...

I can't remember what I did my first time out. I'm a week in, so I suppose I can wait an extra week...

I can work out pretty hard, especially given how heavy I am. I try not to go over 45 minutes, though, but I have to confess that when I am on my treadmill, I have a GameCube hooked up to the TV in that room and sometimes I get a little too into my game and keep going ... Folks, don't try this at home! IT IS AGAINST THE RULES!..

I know they said not to exercise in the beginning, but I dance a lot (zydeco, Cajun, blues) and nothing was going to keep me off the dance floor. I did stop cycling and took shorter walks than I was doing. Although first 3-4 days were tough, both mentally and physically as my stomach shrunk and I got used to the 5 & 1, eating those tiny bars and 7 gulp shakes, it didnt take but a week before they actually satisfied me and my craving for more carbs and more bulk went away. I had no ill effects from dancing all evening, even when my heart was pounding out of my chest at times. That said, I was not super heavy when I started Medifast 16 lbs ago, I had already lost 20 lbs just eating less and eating healthy. Im sure there are good reasons for those medical folks to recommend cutting down on the physical stuff when you start out...

Wood - They tell you not to exercise if you haven't been exercising previously. If you have, then they suggest you cut back during the first few weeks as your body adjusts to the low calories of the 5&1..

MJ Hart - It all depends on the kind of exercise you are wanting to do. Moderate exercise for 30-45 minutes is best. Intensive workouts whether cardio or strength has been known to cause stalls on the scale for many. Again, the 3 weeks is suggested to give your body time to adjust to the shock of starting MF. It's up to you as to what you do and how intensely you choose to work out. It may have some effect on your weight loss, but it may not.

If you ever feel light headed or ill when exercising, stop immediately and remember that you are eating less than 1000 calories a day...
