Hmm... I need to find out myself. I don't know what is the right answer to your question. I'll do some research in Google and get back to you if I bump into an good answer. You should email the people at Verisign as they probably can answer it..
That's what I did..
It charges everyone tax even if they don't live in Kansas...
My sole mission tonight is to figure out why our store is charging for tax in every state as well. I'll let you know if I figure it out. However, I've already spent almost two hours on this the other day..
Here's what I did. All these efforts to set up the tax rate ultimately created multiple entries in the tax_rates table. I had to go into phpMyAdmin, to wipe them out, then start over. I was pointed in that direction by this thread from 2004:.
Then you need to set it up using these steps, as outlined at that link:.
Here is the order things should occur:.
1. Tax Zones, Insert, type in Zone Name and Description, Insert..
2. Details, Insert, select USA and your state, Insert..
3. Tax Classes, new tax class, type in your Tax Class Title and Description, Insert.
4. Tax Rates, new tax rate, select your Tax Class Title, select your Zone, enter your Tax Rate, enter your description, Insert..
Thanks go to Murasaki, nearly five years after his/her post. If you're ever in Atlanta, Georgia, lunch is on me. I'm not sure how long it would have been before I started heading down that path to resolve this..
Is it charging tax for all states or not charging tax for any states?..
Go to Tax Rates and click on Edit. What do you see there?..
Priority - 1.
Tax Class - Taxable Goods.
Zone - Kansas.
Tax Rate - 7.525%..
So I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong..
I want all people who live in Kansas to be taxed..
In tax zones I have Kansas.
I have tax rates for Kansas too.
I then realized everyone was being charged with tax..
So I thought deleting all the other states in the zones area would fix this problem. Now I have another problem I write out my state say it's not kansas and I hit submit and it says there is an error and I need to pick a state and then it gives me a drop down menu for state only listing Kansas...
Humm I'm not sure what happened by ours seems to work fine..
Under Admin > Locations / Taxes > Tax Zones.
Under Admin > Locations / Taxes > Tax Classes.
Insert if not there (Taxable Goods).
Under Admin > Locations / Taxes > Tax Rates.
Set Tax Class (Taxable Goods), Tax Zone (Kansas), Tax Rate (7%).
Make sure your products are listed as Taxable Goods in the product listing page and all is well. If customer in Kansas then they will get hit with tax, if not they shouldn't..
The sub-zone and what not I don't fully understand so we just use the highest rate for the counties in our state to be sure...
