I've got an idea for a new website but it revolves around another major website. It gathers all information from 1 website and the site has the same layout but without the sites logo all over it. I know it's alright to spider information from websites, but this site wouldn't even be able to run without the other site being up. Would that get me in any trouble w/ laws or anything? I'm hoping it doesn't but if it does I'll email the site /img/avatar2.jpg and try to get their permission. Sorry for not giving out to much information yet but I feel that the idea is very unique so I want to wait until it is developed.

I don't think anyone is going to give you permission to copy their site, whether it violates any laws or not it depends on what type of information you are taking from them...

It isn't copying their site. I'm making a game based on information on the users 'profile' from the site...

To "spider" purely, sure. As in, just read and index files locations, but not content or design. (At least I think that's a kosher definition).

But to take creative content from other sites... Negative, Ghostrider; Pattern is full.

Just do a search here for the " copyright" or "google cacheing" or any other of the whirlwind of topics previously discussed in this genre.

Thanks. The site is made to run with the other site. People who use the site would come to mine and put in their information to access it. So the people who typed up the information to go on the regular site are OKing it. So I still don't know from a legal standpoint. I'm thinking that I'm just gonna finish it and contact the owner and show them whats up. It will probably boost their sites popularity so it's a win-win situation and they would probably accept it...

It may be best to contact them before you finish it.

They may not be happy if your using their site to make your own one popular...

When in doubt consult a lawyer not us domainer idoits lol..

Comment #6 spiders and archives, and saves all site's info on their server, for purpose of reference and does not depend on the site for it to exist. depending on the server to exist will eat up it's bandwidth wastefully...

I have a hard time reconciling these two statements. Also, the one about the site having to be up doesn't make much sense. I have a script that does copy content from another site, and I don't have to rely on the other site to be up for my site to run..

I appreciate you think your idea is great, unique, super secret, etc., but you're not going to get any useful advice without explaining what you want to do...
