Digital cameras - Zoom without the Zoom?!
All the cameras I have owned (currently Casio Exilim Z750) have a telescopic lens which comes out an inch or so from the front of the camera. These are 3x optical which is adequate for my needs..

I like Casio but note that many competitors now offer cameras with the same 7MP+ with 3x optical without having this telescopic requirement..

Are these 3x optical just as good?. Has technology moved on and left Casio behind in this regard?. I must admit it would be nice having the same 3X zoom without this protruding lens...

Not really. You'd have to check individual camera reviews to be sure, but the lenses you're talking about are generally inferior to straight optical path zooms..

Just about all of the compact brands have dabbled in that style camera, including Casio. It happens that Casio does not have one in their current lineup, but I bet they will sometime in the future..

For snapshots they are good enough. Fussy photogs stick with the conventional extending lenses. Fuji, Nikon, Olympus, Samsung, and Sony all currently have cameras of this type. But there is not stampede in that direction. I have not used one of these, the reviews indicate most of them have focusing issues. The latest reviews could be interpreted that Samsung now has the edge in performance..

Heck, I would like to have one of these myself, as say, camera #3. I would not be interested in one as my primary camera..

Wow. Surely that 7x Optical must be "at least" equal if not better than a 3x telescopic?..

What makes you say that?.

In this case purely from a numbers perspective. If it was 3x optical vs 5x optical I would agree the telelscopic could be better. But 3x vs 7x and from the same brand (casio) the 7x must be better, if only slightly...

The general rule of thumb is that the shorter the zoom range the better the lens. This is not always the case but a smaller range is usually easier to design..

Just a little hint for you when you're shopping .

Nonsense. using yiour theory a 3x is better than a 10x..

Yes, yes it is. There are other factors but that is the rule of thumb..

I own a lens with no zoom that cost $700..

I also own a lens with a massive 18X zoom that cost $400. Now why would that be the case?.

The word "better" can be applied in many ways. Which I expect is the confusion here. The 10X has better versatility (thus appeals to more photogs). While, if the 3X is built to the same cost as the 10X, it will certainly have better image quality and performance..

In the real world we can expect most 10X to cost more that a 3X. But that is not because they are better quality than the 3X. Rather it's what the camera maker has to do in an attempt to catch up with quality of the 3X..

Not to mention that if the 10x starts at 38mm (like so many do) then it's actually inconvenient to most shooters..

Aha! So that's why they give you a free camera tacked on to the x10 zoom....
